Once the proud home of the Visitation Monastery, the Seminário Maior de Vilar boasts a rich past. The monastery itself was founded at the end of the 19th century by the Marquesa de Monfalim, who was supported in her endeavor by other noblewomen from the Porto society. When the Republic was established in 1910, the separation of Church and State forced the nuns to leave their home. In 1922, the building was acquired by the Diocese of Porto and transformed into a seminary, a place of spiritual growth and training for future priests.
The seminary’s original name was Colegio da Visitaçao and was expanded under the direction of the remarkable Father Himalaia. This towering figure was known for his passion for science and earned his nickname due to his imposing stature.
