George Town Chennai. A name that conjures images of bustling streets and a vibrant past. It’s more than just a neighborhood it’s the beating heart of old Madras. The city’s expansion began here in the 1640s near Fort St George. This area grew from a small settlement around a fortified warehouse belonging to the English East India Company.

Built by Francis Day in 1640 the Fort became a pivotal point. A township grew around it called Black Town by the British. This area became the foundation for Madras’s growth. It served the needs of the people and the rulers’ administrative comforts. The construction of a major port transformed Madras into an important naval base.

George Town expanded rapidly. By the early 18th century its population and commercial activity boomed. Weavers settled in Chintadripet and Collepetta. Washermen moved west forming Washermanpet. Potters created Kosapet. A bridge built in 1710 connected Egmore drawing more people to the Moore Market area.

The British renamed the area George Town in 1911. This honored King George V upon his coronation as Emperor of India. George Town is also known as Muthialpet and Parry’s Corner. The latter is named after the Parry building a prominent landmark. Broadway another name for the area refers to a main thoroughfare.

Intriguingly the French occupation of Madras in 1746 led to a significant event. Upon their departure the English flattened part of Black Town. This created a clear field of fire in case of future attacks. Thirteen pillars marked the boundary between the fort and the flattened area. Only one remains today in the Parry’s building compound.

The area boasts a rich tapestry of religious sites. The first Hindu temples in British Madras were built here. Many were constructed by wealthy merchants often acting as intermediaries between British merchants and local businesses. Several streets are named after these influential figures.

George Town’s streets tell countless stories. Each has its own specialty textiles hardware ceramics. Explore Mint Street one of the world’s longest streets. It stretches for about four kilometers. It was named after the East India Company’s mint once located at its end. Today the building houses the Central Printing Press of the Tamil Nadu government.

The Burma Bazaar is also a fascinating sight. Established in 1969 by Burmese refugees it offers a unique blend of imported goods. Many of George Town’s buildings showcase a blend of architectural styles. Indo-Saracenic Neoclassical Gothic and Art Deco styles are all represented. The Dare House an Art Deco building is a prime example.
