High above Glasgow Green a majestic obelisk pierces the sky. This is Nelson’s Monument a towering tribute to Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. Erected in 1806 it stands as a testament to Glasgow’s civic pride and its enduring connection to Britain’s naval history. The monument’s construction was a remarkable feat. Funds were raised through public subscription a testament to the widespread admiration for Nelson. Its completion in 1807 predated even London’s own Nelson monument making it historically significant.

Designed by architect David Hamilton Nelson’s Monument is a striking 144 feet tall. Cast iron railings enclose its base. Inscriptions on the plinth record Nelson’s birth and death dates along with the names and dates of his pivotal battles at Aboukir Copenhagen and Trafalgar. The monument wasn’t immune to the ravages of time. Shortly after its completion lightning struck it creating a large crack. This dramatic event was even captured in a painting now housed in the nearby People’s Palace.

In 1965 a plaque was added to the plinth commemorating James Watt’s work. Glasgow Green served as a place of inspiration for this pioneer of the steam engine. The monument stands as a visible reminder of Glasgow’s rich history and its pivotal role in industrial advancement. This is more than just a monument. It is a symbol of a city’s unwavering dedication to remembering its heroes and celebrating its cultural heritage. In 1970 it received a Category A listing solidifying its importance in Scotland’s architectural landscape. It’s a landmark you can’t miss. It stands proudly in Glasgow Green a reminder of the great admiral and a symbol of Glasgow itself.
