Established in 1871, the Askania-Werke began as a modest workshop. It quickly transformed into a powerhouse of precision. Its founder, Carl Bamberg, a protege of Carl Zeiss, had a vision. He wanted to create instruments of exceptional quality for navies, observatories, and research expeditions. Askania-Werke initially operated from two locations. One was the Bambergwerk in Berlin-Friedenau. The other was the Central Workshop in Dessau. Askania-Werke’s growth continued with strategic acquisitions. These included Otto Toepfer und Sohn, Hermann Wanschaff, and Hans Heele. This led to the formation of Carl Bamberg Friedenau. The formal Askania-Werke AG was established in 1921 by merging with the Centralwerkstatte Dessau. Askania-Werke further expanded. It even incorporated Dr. A. Koepsel GmbH, known for electrical measurements. The company’s expansion necessitated a new workshop in Berlin-Mariendorf. By the start of World War II, Askania-Werke employed about 20,000 people. Askania-Werke also ventured into innovative technologies. In 1959, it experimented with a theodolite. This theodolite featured electronic diameter circle reading, a significant advancement. The company also collaborated with Keuffel & Esser, making its mark in the American market. This partnership was vital because Keuffel & Esser’s traditional theodolites were becoming outdated. The market demanded modern instruments, like those introduced by Heinrich Wild. In the mid-1960s, Askania-Werke became part of the Dutch company Oldelft. This was later known as Delft Instruments. The goal was to develop the first electronic tachymeter. We would now call this a total station. The project, however, was halted due to budget concerns and market uncertainty. Later, Askania-Werke became part of the Conti-Elektro Concern. By 1967, it had around 1,600 to 1,700 employees. The company remained active in various fields. These fields included radio astronomy, nuclear physics, measuring and control technology, geophysics, and geodesy. Sadly, after being taken over by Siemens, Askania-Werke ceased to exist in its original form in 1971. Remarkably, Askania was revived in 2006. The new Askania focuses on producing high-quality mechanical wristwatches. These watches often incorporate classic designs. They even retain the original firm’s logo, marking a full circle in the company’s history.
