Picture the Kleiner Goldener Saal. It stands before you a late Baroque masterpiece. This isn’t just any hall. It’s a survivor a testament to Augsburg’s rich history.

Originally the Aula of the Jesuit College St Salvator the Kleiner Goldener Saal whispers tales of scholarly pursuits. Founded in 1582 the college was expanded in 1763. The upper floors of two buildings were joined creating the architectural foundation for this grand hall. Johann Michael Feuchtmayer a renowned artist was commissioned to work on the stucco.

But the real star is the magnificent ceiling fresco. Painted in 1765 by Matthäus Günther it’s a visual feast. The central scene depicts the Annunciation a pivotal moment in Christian history. Above the Virgin Mary a radiant light symbolizes the divine. This light is cleverly directed by an angel using a mirror to subtly illuminate King Ahaz. The fresco intricately connects biblical prophecy with earthly events. It’s a hidden layer of meaning for those who know where to look.

The four corner frescoes further enhance the hall’s splendor. Each features a short Latin inscription. They invoke Mary in different roles reflecting the hall’s association with the Marian Congregation. The Congregation was established in 1589 highlighting the importance of Mary within the Jesuit college.

The Kleiner Goldener Saal’s story isn’t just one of beauty. It’s also one of resilience. After the Jesuit order was dissolved the hall was used as a barracks. It endured damage and the passage of time. However three restorations in 1832 1949 and 2004 brought it back to its former glory. An inscription in the hall serves as a silent testament to these efforts.

Today the Kleiner Goldener Saal thrives. It hosts concerts part of Augsburg’s vibrant cultural scene. It’s a versatile space accommodating up to 320 people for concerts or 140 for banquets. The Gymnasium bei St Stephan still uses the hall as its aula a lasting link to its past. The Kleiner Goldener Saal is more than just a room. It’s a living piece of Augsburg’s legacy.
