Has anyone ever felt the weight of history settle on their shoulders like a comforting shawl? Here at Newburg United Methodist Church, that feeling is palpable. The very air hums with the echoes of faith and community, reaching back to 1834. Newburg United Methodist Church wasn’t always at this precise spot. Its first home stood humbly on the east side of Newburgh Road, south of Ann Arbor Trail. Picture a small settlement, barely large enough for two churches. Yet, there they were: the Methodists and the Congregationalists, facing each other across the dusty road. Realizing their combined strength would outweigh their differences, they merged. They adopted the Methodist name and structure but cleverly utilized the Congregationalists’ building. This spirit of unity became a defining characteristic of Newburg United Methodist Church. In 1915, hoping to draw more worshippers, the church moved to the crossroads. The congregation thrived despite hardships, led by student preachers from Ann Arbor. They even managed to raise enough money to build a parsonage. The church’s growth continued through World War II, necessitating more space. A generous donation of four acres from the Emma Arnold estate led to the construction of a new parsonage, sanctuary, and educational wing. This new era for Newburg United Methodist Church was officially consecrated on May 27, 1962. Nine years later, yet another addition was needed to house the burgeoning congregation. And in 1979, a new Fellowship Hall and kitchen were built, solidifying the church’s role as a community hub. The original church building wasn’t forgotten. It now resides at Greenmead Historical Park. It serves as a non-denominational church and hosts weddings and special events, a testament to its enduring legacy. Newburg United Methodist Church continues to embrace its mission of “Serving Christ, Building Community, and Loving All.” It’s a Reconciling Congregation, proudly affiliated with the Reconciling Ministries Network, welcoming all individuals with open arms. The church’s history is a testament to the power of faith, adaptation, and the enduring spirit of community.
