Picture this A sprawling campus bathed in the morning sun. This is Makuhari International School. It’s not just a school. It’s a testament to a dream. A dream born from a desire to improve the lives of foreigners in Chiba. A dream to provide a quality education to Japanese children returning from abroad. And a dream to attract foreign investment to the region.

Makuhari International School opened its doors in April 2009. It welcomed students from kindergarten to grade 6. But its story began long before that. In May 2006 an application was made to establish this unique institution. It aimed to be more than just an average school. It was designed with large outdoor learning areas. It also included specialist rooms and open classrooms. There was even an expansive media centre.

The school’s success wasn’t a given. There were hurdles to overcome. International schools in Japan weren’t always fully recognized under Japanese law. This presented challenges for students transitioning to regular Japanese schools. However Makuhari International School was different. It secured Article One status. This allowed it to use its own unique curriculum. It also made it easier for students to transfer to Japanese junior high schools.

The school’s design is striking. It’s largely one-story. It’s primarily built of wood. The architects were carefully chosen. They created a modern and forward-looking space. This design earned an award from the Architectural Institute of Japan in 2011. The school’s facilities are impressive. They include a state-of-the-art gymnasium. They also include a large grass field and specialist rooms like a science lab and an art room.

In May 2016 the school expanded further. New additions included a spacious gymnasium and more classrooms. These provided space for learning support English support and Japanese studies. There was also space for after-school care. The school continues to strive for excellence. Its students consistently outperform international standards. They also typically score at or above national and prefectural standards in Japanese.

Makuhari International School is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a community hub. It fosters collaboration between the school and the local area. It uses its resources to benefit both its students and the wider community. This is a place where a dream was realized. A dream of providing a first-class international education. It has become a model for other international schools in Japan. A model of success. A model of innovation. A model of community. And a place where children learn. They learn and grow and thrive. They become globally-minded citizens ready to take on the world.
