In 1906, a colossal structure began to rise on the banks of the Pearl River. This was the Asiatic Petroleum Company’s Long Cang depot (亚细亚龙藏仓旧址), a testament to the burgeoning trade between East and West. The Asiatic Petroleum Company, a British-Dutch enterprise, had set its sights on Guangzhou. They recognized its strategic importance as a major trading port. The company chose this location meticulously. The river provided convenient access for their tankers, and the surrounding area offered ample space for storage. The original site of the Long Cang depot (亚细亚龙藏仓旧址) sprawled across an impressive 1.06 hectares. The main office building, constructed in 1906, stands as a prominent feature of the depot. This brick and concrete structure features a unique “凹” shaped layout, a subtle architectural flourish. The building measures 14.5 meters wide and 25.2 meters deep. This one-and-a-half-story Western-style edifice boasts a partially subterranean ventilated storage room, a later addition around 1920. A flat rooftop terrace graces the front of the building, while the back features a pitched, tiled roof. The Italianate plasterwork adorns the building, adding a touch of European elegance. Several original multi-paned windows still remain. A grand entrance welcomes visitors from the east side. Two large oil storage warehouses, built around the 1920s, stand as imposing sentinels flanking the main building. These steel-framed structures, with their red brick walls and tiled roofs, measure 31.8 meters wide and 77.2 meters deep. They cover a substantial 2455.9 square meters. The Long Cang depot (亚细亚龙藏仓旧址) isn’t just a collection of old buildings. It’s a window into Guangzhou’s past, a tangible link to the city’s rich history of international trade. It stands as a reminder of a time when Guangzhou served as the main distribution hub for South China. The Long Cang depot (亚细亚龙藏仓旧址) offers a glimpse into the operations of foreign oil companies in early 20th-century Guangzhou. It highlights the city’s importance in the global petroleum trade. This site is a valuable resource for understanding the development of modern industry in Guangzhou. The depot holds significant cultural importance. In 2005, the Long Cang depot (亚细亚龙藏仓旧址) was recognized for its historical value and designated as a registered protected cultural relic by the Guangzhou municipal government. Later, in December 2008, the site was granted further recognition. It was declared a municipal-level cultural heritage site as part of a larger collection of “Modern foreign trade warehouses and wharves”. The Long Cang depot (亚细亚龙藏仓旧址) remains a poignant symbol of Guangzhou’s vibrant past. It serves as a quiet reminder of an era defined by international commerce and cultural exchange.
