Thirty hectares of green haven. That’s Parcul Drumul Taberei. Nestled in Sector 6 of Bucharest it’s the largest park in the Drumul Taberei neighborhood.

Parcul Drumul Taberei wasn’t always a sprawling oasis. Its origins are deeply intertwined with the neighborhood’s history. Planned and built around the 1960s it served a population of 60000 people. It was once known as Parcul Alexandru Moghioroș after a former Romanian vice-premier. A dubious honor for a man who ordered the slaughter of all stray horses in Romania.

The park’s transformation isn’t just about its name. In 1976 a three-basin swimming pool complex known as Trei Ligheane was added. The earth excavated for this pool created an artificial hill. Today a private company operates this area calling it Magic Summer Waves.

Major renovations took place between 2013 and 2015. This brought many changes. It led to some controversy about the quality of work and the adaptation to the existing terrain. The beautiful new greenhouses showcasing exotic plants were a final touch. Opened in 2019 they’re a testament to the park’s ongoing evolution.

But Parcul Drumul Taberei is more than just renovations and namesakes. It houses an artificial lake. It has a maximum depth of 130 meters. This lake isn’t just pretty. It’s used for recreational activities like hydrobike rides and even open-air movie screenings. The lake also features a Brutalist-style artesian well. It stands as another unique emblem of the park.

An amphitheater built during the renovation replaced a former children’s summer theater. It hosts festivals concerts and film screenings. The popular Cinema sub Stele event draws many people every year.

Parcul Drumul Taberei reflects Bucharest’s past present and future. From its Communist-era origins to its modern amenities it’s a dynamic space. A living testament to the city’s vibrant spirit. So take a stroll explore its paths and discover for yourself the magic of Parcul Drumul Taberei.
