Beyond the glitz and glamour of modern Riyadh lies As-Suwaidi District. This district holds a unique place in the city’s narrative. It whispers tales of a past intertwined with rapid urbanization and complex social dynamics. As-Suwaidi emerged as a prominent residential area during the oil boom of the 1970s and 80s. Many Saudis migrated from rural areas, seeking opportunities in the burgeoning capital. As-Suwaidi, located on the western bank of Wadi Hanifa, offered a haven. Initially on the outskirts, it gradually became engulfed by the expanding city. As-Suwaidi became known for its large population, primarily middle-income Saudis. In the early days, one of the first settlers, Saleh Al-Mizyad, bought land when the area wasn’t even on the map. He recounts how a hired guard refused to stay on the “deserted land”. This illustrates the district’s transformation. As-Suwaidi also gained notoriety in 2003. Fifteen of the 26 “most wanted terrorists” listed by the Saudi government had ties to the district. This led to comparisons with Fallujah, Iraq, by some Saudis. One former resident, Abdul Rahman Al-Zahrani, attributes this to the influence of strict religious preachers in the area. He believes many young people were drawn to extremism and sought jihad in Afghanistan. Upon their return, some turned their focus inward, targeting Saudi society. In contrast to this darker side, As-Suwaidi also boasts a community library. It serves as a center for intellectual pursuits, a stark contrast to the extremist ideologies that have sometimes permeated the area. As you leave As-Suwaidi, signs prompt reflection on faith and forgiveness, a reminder of the complex interplay of religion and daily life in the district. The district is known for its religious fervor. An Indian resident of 15 years observed the strict adherence to Islamic practices and the pressure to conform. Yet, signs of modernization are evident, with fast-food chains and shops selling cigarettes and music, highlighting the district’s evolving identity. As-Suwaidi District stands as a microcosm of Riyadh’s transformation. It’s a blend of tradition and modernity, grappling with social and religious complexities.
