“For children without mothers from a mother without a child” This inscription above the icon of Saint Catherine on the west facade tells a poignant story. It’s a story etched into the very walls of the Capela Sfanta Ecaterina in Bucharest.

This small chapel stands near the Arc de Triomf a silent witness to faith and resilience. It’s more than just a pretty building. It’s a testament to the compassion of Bucharest’s elite at the turn of the 20th century.

The Capela Sfanta Ecaterina was built in 1901. It’s part of a larger complex the Leaganul Sfanta Ecaterina. This was a pioneering orphanage for poor children founded in 1897. Wealthy women like Ecaterina Cantacuzino spearheaded the project. Queen Elisabeth herself was the honorary president. The orphanage provided shelter and care for abandoned children and unwed mothers. It aimed to prevent the separation of infants from their mothers.

The chapel itself was built at the initiative of Irina Ghica nee Cantacuzino. She dedicated it to the memory of her daughter. Her daughter Ecaterina Olimpia Georgeta was tragically taken from her after a divorce. The inscription on the chapel reflects Irina Ghica’s profound loss and her desire to help other children in need.

The building’s Neo-Romanian style reflects the architectural preferences of the time. Ion D Berindey designed it. He was a prominent architect whose works grace Bucharest’s landscape. The chapel’s architecture blends seamlessly into the overall design of the orphanage complex.

Sadly the Capela Sfanta Ecaterina suffered greatly under communism. It was stripped of its sacred purpose. It became a mess hall then a laundry and finally a storage room. Years of neglect took their toll. The walls were damp and crumbling. Yet miraculously the frescoes remained. They survived the ordeal showing Christ Pantocrator and scenes of the Nativity and the Virgin Mary. The iconic paintings were a testament to hope in the face of adversity.

The chapel’s revival began in 1998. Volunteers from the Biserica Sfantu Silvestru church came to help. Among them was Stefan Sava a theology student. He became the chapel’s priest. He worked tirelessly to restore the building’s former glory. He didn’t just rebuild a building. He rekindled a spirit of faith and community.

The Capela Sfanta Ecaterina stands today. It is a place of worship and a center for social work. It provides a lifeline for vulnerable women and children. It’s a constant reminder that even in the darkest of times hope prevails. The legacy of those who built the chapel and those who restored it continues to inspire. Its story is far more than just bricks and mortar. It is a beacon of faith hope and love in the heart of Bucharest.
