Stadionul Dinamo

Did you ever hear of a stadium nicknamed “The Pit”? Right here before us stands Stadionul Dinamo, a place affectionately known as “Groapa” by locals. It’s a fitting name, given its unique construction. Instead of raised stands, the field is dug down, creating a pit-like playing area. Stadionul Dinamo is more than just a stadium; it’s a symbol of Romanian football history and the home of FC Dinamo București. The stadium was originally built in 1951. It hosted its first match, Dinamo versus Locomotiva Timișoara, on October 14th of that year. Over the years, Stadionul Dinamo has seen renovations, floodlights added in 2001, and its seating capacity adjusted to the current 15,032. While plans exist for a new stadium, this ground holds decades of memories. This isn’t just a place for soccer; it’s a venue for athletics too, boasting a track around the pitch. In 2001, during renovations, a World War II shell was unearthed just 20 meters from the stands. A stark reminder of the past lurking beneath the surface of this sporting ground. The stadium has also hosted international matches. Romania played against Japan and Georgia here. If you look to the North stand, you’ll see it bears a special name: Peluza Cătălin Hîldan. It honors a Dinamo player who tragically died in 2000 at the young age of 24. Stadionul Dinamo isn’t just about victories and defeats. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Romanian football.
