Enveloped by the tranquil beauty of the mountains, lies Lingshui Village, also known as Lingshui. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, whispering tales of centuries past. Lingshui, cradled in the Mengtougou District of Beijing, is more than just a village. It’s a living museum, a testament to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Imagine strolling through lanes lined with traditional residences, their weathered facades echoing the laughter and lives of generations. Lingshui Village earned a unique nickname, “Ju Ren Village”. This name speaks to a time when the imperial examination system held sway. Many villagers achieved the prestigious “Ju Ren” title, a mark of success at the provincial level. A stone man stands guard on a nearby mountain, arm raised as if in the act of writing. Villagers believe this figure played a role in the village’s scholarly achievements. Lingshui holds more than just historical homes. Temples, once vibrant with the smoke of incense and the murmur of prayers, now stand in ruins. The remnants of Lingquan Temple, Nanhai Fire Dragon Temple, and the Temple of Immortals offer glimpses into the village’s spiritual past. Lingshui Village itself is laid out in the shape of a giant turtle, its head facing south and tail to the north. Alleys and hutongs form the intricate patterns on its back. The Southern Hill offers the best vantage point to appreciate this unique layout. Ancient trees, silent witnesses to the passage of time, add to Lingshui’s mystical charm. A thousand-year-old cypress stands solitary on a hill, resembling a sacred ganoderma. Two equally ancient cypresses grace the South China Sea Fire Dragon King Temple. One shelters a large elm between its multiple trunks. The other embraces both a mulberry and an artemisia, a rare and wondrous sight. Even the ginkgo trees in the courtyard of Lingquan Temple hold a secret. Though originally male, the western tree mysteriously bears fruit each year on a single female branch. Lingshui Village invites you to step back in time, to wander through its historic lanes and contemplate the stories whispered by the stones and trees.
