“Hanged and carefully buried.” That’s what might come to mind standing here on Galgenhügel in Erfurt. This place whispers tales of justice long past. Tales from a time when this hill served as a grim stage for public executions. Though Alkersleben’s “Gericht” might have remained unnoticed. Had Erfurt’s execution site not been excavated in 1999.

Welcome to Galgenhügel. It is a place where history and mystery intertwine. The Galgenhügel offers stunning views over the Thuringian Basin. It has a rather unsettling past. Today we will delve into that past.

The hill’s location is no accident. It stands along the old Nuremberg road to Erfurt. This was a major medieval trade route. Placing the gallows here sent a clear message. Justice would be served. Lawbreakers would meet their end visibly. It served as a deterrent to all travelers. The high ground made the spectacle all the more prominent.

Archaeological digs paint a clearer picture. Excavations in 1971 and later in 2009 and 2010 uncovered unsettling finds. Around 50 skeletons were found. They were buried with their hands bound. This suggests these were not peaceful interments. An unusual stone setting was discovered, too. It surrounded one particular body. Some people think this was to prevent the dead from rising.

One skeleton had a fractured vertebra. This suggests a violent death. The broken neck possibly resulted from hanging. Another skeleton still had a medieval belt buckle. This shows they were buried in their clothes. Were these individuals criminals? Were they victims of a different era? Were they meticulously put to rest?

Records mention executioners from Arnstadt. They held dominion over Alkersleben. Yet no explicit mention of the Galgenhügel executions exists. A source from 1914 calls Alkersleben a former court village. It refers to the “Gericht” as an elevated hill. The locals knew it as Galgenhügel. This translates to Gallows Hill.

The hill has a deeper past. The excavations revealed a prehistoric stone pavement. Urn shards were found. These finds suggest it was once an ancient burial or cult site. It was later repurposed as a place of execution. This transformation speaks volumes.

The name “Galgenhügel” says it all. It is a constant reminder of the hill’s dark purpose. Today the hill is a protected area. Its slopes are covered in grassland. The Galgenhügel is home to a diverse array of plant and animal life. It hosts 255 plant species, 59 bird species and numerous insects.

As we conclude our visit to Galgenhügel remember its story. It is a story of ancient rituals and medieval justice. A story etched into the very soil beneath our feet. The Galgenhügel reminds us of a darker chapter in Erfurt’s history. A chapter where the price of justice was paid on this very hill.
