Did you know that this very spot holds a legacy stretching back to 1836? Right here stands Union Second Baptist Church the oldest Black-owned religious institution in the Midwest. Its story is one of defiance resilience and unwavering faith.

Imagine thirteen courageous men and women former slaves defying the oppressive norms of their time. They dared to create their own church a sanctuary free from the discrimination they faced at First Baptist Church. This act of bravery laid the foundation for Union Second Baptist Church. This church wasn’t just a place of worship it became a beacon of hope.

For decades Union Second Baptist Church served as a crucial station on the Underground Railroad. Thousands of enslaved people found refuge within its walls. They received food clothing and shelter before continuing their perilous journey to freedom in Canada. This was an incredibly dangerous act of resistance. The church openly defied the Fugitive Slave Laws. It risked everything to aid those seeking escape.

The church’s commitment to education was equally remarkable. In 1839 it established Detroit’s first school for Black children. Fannie Richards a member of the congregation later became the city’s first Black career public school teacher. This was a monumental step forward in the fight for equal opportunities.

Union Second Baptist Church also played a pivotal role in the fight for voting rights. In 1843 and 1865 the church hosted conventions demanding suffrage for Black citizens. These petitions were denied. The church persisted however until the end of the Civil War and the passage of the 13th 14th and 15th Amendments.

Beyond its role in the fight for freedom Union Second Baptist Church also fostered important connections. Frederick Douglass a prominent abolitionist spoke here shortly before a meeting with John Brown. These two remarkable figures met to plan strategies for freeing enslaved people. In 1863 the church hosted a public reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. This was done to explain its limitations to the community.

Even today Union Second Baptist Church continues its legacy of service. It stands as a testament to the strength resilience and unwavering spirit of its founders and members. It is a place where history echoes in every pew and every stained-glass window. Reflect on the sacrifices and triumphs within these walls. They represent an invaluable contribution to Detroit’s vibrant tapestry. The legacy of Union Second Baptist Church lives on.
