Imagine peering through the narrow arrow slits, the city of Brandenburg an der Havel stretching out before you. This is the Rathenower Torturm, a proud sentinel of the old city walls, a silent witness to the past. The Rathenower Torturm, one of the few remaining gates of the medieval fortification, was once a vital part of Brandenburg’s defenses. It was built around 1290, a sturdy brick structure designed to withstand even the most determined attack. The tower boasts a unique design, incorporating decorative elements such as horizontal friezes, and round and coat-of-arms recesses. One fascinating fact is that these recesses once displayed the coats-of-arms of different rulers, including the Wittelsbachs, and the Brandenburgic Eagle. The Rathenower Torturm was not only a fortress, it was also a trade route – trade routes leading to the town of Rathenow, about 30 kilometers to the northwest, passed through the gate. The tower’s history is full of dramatic twists and turns. It served as a prison, a lookout post, and even a watchtower, where guards kept watch over the city’s inhabitants. In 1585, the tower’s wooden top was replaced with a stone battlement, a testament to the city’s growing strength and ambition. Today, the Rathenower Torturm stands proudly, a testament to the city’s enduring spirit. Although it no longer serves as a gate, you have the chance to climb its steps during the annual tower day to see the city from above. If you close your eyes, you can almost hear the echoes of the city’s past – the clang of iron, the shouts of guards, the creak of the drawbridge – all whispering tales of a bygone era. The Rathenower Torturm: a symbol of strength, a reminder of the past and a gateway to the rich history of Brandenburg an der Havel.
