Ever wondered what a Southern California vibe looks like in New Jersey? The Shops at Riverside, originally Riverside Square Mall, offers a fascinating glimpse into that very idea. This “lavishly appointed” mall first opened its doors on March 10, 1977. Initially, it boasted terra cotta tiles, red brick, and inviting skylights, bringing a touch of West Coast sunshine to the Garden State. The Shops at Riverside, however, isn’t just about aesthetics. It has a rich history. The mall began as a freestanding Bloomingdale’s in 1959. The enclosed mall we see today sprung up around it nearly two decades later. The original Bloomingdale’s became part of the larger mall complex. Over the years, The Shops at Riverside has undergone significant transformations. A major renovation in 1995 saw the mall embrace a more modern look with marble floors, glass railings, and comfortable seating. A further expansion between 2005 and 2008 added even more retail and dining space. The Shops at Riverside even reclaimed some space from Bloomingdale’s to create this expansion. This included relocating the Bloomingdale’s Home Store to the north end of the main store. The mall’s anchor stores have also shifted over time. Originally, Saks Fifth Avenue was a major presence. However, it closed in 2014. An AMC Dine-In Theater now occupies that space, offering a luxurious movie-going experience. Today, the mall’s anchors include Bloomingdale’s, Barnes & Noble, and Pottery Barn. The Shops at Riverside isn’t just a place to shop. It’s a testament to the changing retail landscape and the evolution of a shopping destination.
