Here stands Biserica Mărcuța a testament to Bucharest’s layered past. Biserica Mărcuța is more than just an old church. It’s a survivor. It has stood here since 1587. That makes it one of Bucharest’s oldest structures still in use.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine 1586. Logofăt Dan starts construction during the reign of Mihnea Turcitul. Later, Vișana renovates the church. She was the daughter of armașul Marcu. This is where the name “Mărcuța” comes from.

The location was strategic. Biserica Mărcuța was built in a swampy area near Lake Fundeni. Its heavy fortified walls made it a refuge. Locals sought shelter here during enemy invasions.

Inside the old Biserica Mărcuța, you can still see remnants of the 16th-century paintings. They depict armașul Marcu. Think about the hands that created these images so long ago.

Biserica Mărcuța underwent several renovations. These occurred during 1632–1654, 1678–1688 and 1966–1967. Each era left its mark on this sacred place.

The church played a vital role in difficult times. During the 19th-century plague, it became a hospital and even a mass grave. In 1839, Wallachia’s first mental hospital opened here. It served as the country’s primary facility until 1920.

Even the great poet Mihai Eminescu spent time here. He was hospitalized at Biserica Mărcuța for a mercury-based treatment. Imagine Eminescu walking these grounds.

Outside the old church, a newer church was consecrated in 2013. It bears the names “Înălțarea Domnului” and “Sfântul Mare Mucenic Pantelimon”. The old and the new stand side-by-side.

Today, Biserica Mărcuța stands as a historical monument. Its code is LMI B-II-m-A-18157.01. The site includes a bell tower built in 1779.

Take a moment to appreciate Biserica Mărcuța. It is not just a building. It is a symbol of resilience. It has been a refuge, a hospital, and a place of worship. It is a place where history whispers.
