Gazing up at the Statuia Gigantul, one might feel a pang of empathy for this stone giant. Here in Parcul Carol I, the Statuia Gigantul stands as a testament to unrequited love and artistic brilliance. The statue, originally part of a larger work titled “The Enchanted Grotto,” was created for the Romanian General Exhibition in 1906. The sculptor Frederic Storck brought this towering 3.5-meter figure to life, inspired by Carmen Sylva’s “Legend of the Jepi.” This legend tells of twin brothers, Andrei and Mirea, both deeply in love with the same woman, Rolanda. Rolanda, unable to choose, declared that whoever saved her from a precipice would win her hand. She then leaped into the abyss, transforming into a waterfall. The brothers, consumed by grief, were turned to stone, becoming the Jepi, or giants. The Statuia Gigantul here depicts one of these brothers, forever frozen in a moment of intense emotion. Originally, the Statuia Gigantul stood alongside another giant sculpted by Dimitrie Paciurea, and a statue of the sleeping Rolanda, known as Frumoasa adormită, created by Filip Marin. These three figures were placed before the Palace of Arts and an artificial cave, forming a poignant tableau. Sadly, the grotto was destroyed during the communist era. Frumoasa adormită now rests in Herăstrău Park. The two giants were moved to their current positions flanking the main alley of Parcul Carol I. The sheer size of the Statuia Gigantul is impressive. The contorted pose of the figure conveys the inner turmoil and the desperate struggle of the brother. The statue showcases Storck’s mastery of human anatomy, captured with stunning realism despite its monumental scale. The details of the musculature, while not exaggerated, effectively emphasize the volumes and contribute to the overall decorative effect. A closer look reveals the meticulous craftsmanship. The Statuia Gigantul holds a unique place in Romanian sculpture, offering a glimpse into the artistic vision of Frederic Storck and the tragic tale of the Jepi.
