Could you imagine standing where caravans once rested? This very spot near Masjid Najia Al-Omari in Medina offers a glimpse into a rich history. Medina is the second holiest city in Islam. It follows only Mecca in importance.

Masjid Najia Al-Omari likely shares in Medina’s historical tapestry. Medina is where Muhammad established the Muslim community. He fled from Mecca in 622 CE. His body is entombed here. Pilgrims visit his tomb in the city’s main mosque.

Medina sits on a fertile oasis 2050 feet above sea level. Lava fields bound the east. Arid hills from the Hejaz range surround the other sides. Mount Uhud is the highest of these hills.

The Prophet’s Mosque is at Medina’s heart. Muhammad helped build it. Non-Muslims cannot enter this sacred area. They can view it from outside. Caliphs added to the mosque over time.

Medina’s landscape features sites of deep Islamic significance. The Quba Mosque was the first in Islamic history. Muhammad saw Mecca from there. The Mosque of the Two Qiblahs marks the prayer direction change. It shifted from Jerusalem to Mecca. Hamza’s tomb honors the Prophet’s uncle. He and others fell in the Battle of Uhud. The Prophet was wounded in that battle. A cave on Uhud’s flank offered him refuge.

Other mosques commemorate events. They mark where he donned armor and rested. One notes where he unfurled his standard for the Battle of the Ditch. The ditch itself was dug around Medina by Muhammad.

Medina’s residents mainly speak Arabic. Most are Sunni Muslims. Many pilgrims settle here. Farming and pottery are important jobs. The city is famous for its date palms.

Medina connected to Damascus by the Hejaz railway from 1908 to 1916. World War I destroyed it. A railway now links Medina and Jeddah. Roads connect it to Jeddah, Mecca, and Yanbu. Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz International Airport serves the city.

Muhammad’s arrival in 622 CE started a new chapter. This flight or hijrah marks the Muslim calendar’s start. Medina became the administrative capital. Damascus later took that role in 661.

The Ottomans controlled Medina after 1517. Their rule weakened. The Wahhabis took the city in 1804. A Turko-Egyptian force retook it in 1812. Ottoman rule ended in World War I. Hussein ibn Ali revolted. He put the railroad out of commission with T.E. Lawrence’s help. Ibn Saud took the city in 1925.

Masjid Najia Al-Omari stands as a testament. It reflects Medina’s enduring spiritual and historical importance. Its walls hold echoes of a vibrant past. It connects us to the heart of Islamic heritage.
