Wow What a transformation This isn’t just a building it’s a testament to the power of community and art.
Welcome to the Jamaica Performing Arts Center a vibrant hub of creativity nestled in the heart of Queens. This incredible space wasn’t always a stage for dazzling performances. It began life as the Queens Register of Titles and Deeds Building a grand neo-Renaissance structure built between 1895 and 1913. Imagine this imposing three-story building with its limestone facade a symbol of officialdom. Then imagine the shift a complete metamorphosis.
In the late 1960s the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation saw potential beyond the building’s bureaucratic past. They envisioned a space that would revitalize the community and become a magnet for the arts. The abandoned building was transformed becoming the Jamaica Arts Center. Its opening in 1972 marked a turning point in Jamaica Queens.
This wasn’t just a renovation. It was a restoration of hope. The Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning JCAL as it later became opened its doors bringing visual and performing arts to thousands. The building itself was recognized for its “special historical and aesthetic interest” becoming a New York City landmark in 1974. It’s also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. That’s quite a history isn’t it?
The JCAL isn’t just about the past. It continues to thrive. It boasts galleries studios and a 99-seat theater. Its School of the Arts offers classes for children and adults. Renowned artists have graced its stages and its walls have showcased incredible works. The JCAL even pioneers arts-in-education programs.
But the story doesn’t end there. Two blocks away another landmark needed saving a historic church. The community rallied again. This led to the creation of the Jamaica Performing Arts Center JPAC a multiuse theatre a stunning addition to the JCAL campus. JPAC showcases flexible seating for 400 people and meeting rooms.
Today the JPAC is a recipient of the Lucy G. Moses Award a prestigious award for preservation. Both the JPAC and JCAL work together promoting the arts in Queens.
