“A proposed building. Three thousand square meters. Five stories high.” That’s how the story of Wellington-De l’Église began. This wasn’t just any construction project. It threatened the heart of Verdun. The Wellington-De l’Église area is more than just streets and shops. It’s a community. A community where the Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs church stands tall. It’s a beloved landmark. A symbol of Verdun’s spirit.

The proposed building loomed large. It didn’t fit the area’s character. It was too big. It was out of place. The developer’s plan was to build a massive grocery store. This would be on the first floor. The building would block the beautiful views of the church. Many Verdun residents felt a deep connection to their church. They felt threatened by this development.

In 2017 around 250 citizens mobilized. They signed a petition. Their actions were powerful. They forced a reconsideration of the project. They even forced a potential referendum. The project was ultimately cancelled. The delays and uncertainties affected the profitability for Robert Bellemare the planned grocer. The project was deemed too risky and ultimately abandoned.

The story of Wellington-De l’Église is a reminder of the importance of community action. It shows how people can come together. They can protect what matters most to them. The vibrant heart of Verdun. The views of the church. The unique character of the street. Today we stand here. We see the preservation of a neighbourhood’s soul. We see a victory for community. A testament to the power of collective voices. Let’s remember this story as we continue our walk. We’ll see the area flourish even more because of its tenacious residents.
