High above Blantyre at Auchentibber stands a monument. It’s not just stone and marble. It’s a story etched in time. This is the Auchentibber War Memorial. In 1921, Auchentibber villagers decided to honor their fallen World War I heroes. They envisioned a permanent memorial. It would remember the local men who sacrificed everything.
The Auchentibber War Memorial has an interesting origin. It wasn’t built from just any materials. A piece of Italian marble came from Hamilton Palace. Hamilton Palace was once a grand building. It stood where the 24 Hamilton Asda is now. The palace fell into disrepair. Parts of it were sold off including a fireplace. This marble became part of the Auchentibber War Memorial.
A local inn owner, Mr. Struthers, gifted the marble. He also donated black marble staircase elements from the palace. These were incorporated into the memorial’s design. The Auchentibber War Memorial stands sixteen feet tall. It is nine feet wide. It’s located behind the historic Italianate Quoiting Green.
The dedication of the Auchentibber War Memorial was a major event. It occurred in May 1923. Six thousand people attended. Lord Belhaven conducted the unveiling service. Wreaths were laid in total silence. Pipers played a lament. Buglers sounded “The Last Post” and “Reveille.” A choir sang the Hallelujah Chorus. Mr. Struthers handed over the title deeds. He entrusted them to the Parish Council Chairman. It was a sacred trust to keep the memory of the fallen alive. The Chairman promised the memorial would be well cared for.
Over time, the Auchentibber War Memorial faced challenges. The road became busier. Stopping to view it became difficult. The increased traffic caused structural issues. Cracks and subsidence became a concern. Ornamental details were damaged. Corrosion affected the structure.
In 2018, a grant of £30,000 was awarded. It was for conservation and repair work. The Auchentibber War Memorial was dismantled and reconstructed. The foundations were strengthened. Missing architectural features were reinstated. The dedication plaque was repainted. The surrounding area was re-landscaped. Yew and laurel hedging were added.
The completed works were unveiled in time for the November 2018 Centenary commemorations. Motorists expressed delight at the transformation. The Auchentibber War Memorial stands as a tribute. It remembers the “Glorious Dead” of 1914-1919. It bears the inscription “Greater Love Hath No Man Than This.” The Auchentibber War Memorial is a testament to their sacrifice. It is a reminder of the community’s enduring gratitude.
