How about stepping back in time right here at Greenpoint Reformed Church? This isn’t just any church. It is a place with a unique story that intertwines faith, community and a touch of artistic surprise.

Greenpoint Reformed Church is a beacon of faith in the Greenpoint neighborhood. The church stands at 136 Milton Street. It is a part of the Reformed Church in America and United Church of Christ.

Let’s talk about a hidden gem within these walls. Have you noticed the fireplace tilework? These aren’t ordinary tiles. They feature historic porcelain plaques. They depict Robert Fulton and Robert Livingston. A curator from the Metropolitan Museum of Art believes the Union Porcelain Factory crafted these plaques in the 1870s. Interestingly this factory was also located right here in Greenpoint.

This building has quite the past. It was once a private residence. Thomas C. Smith owned it. He was the owner of Brooklyn Union Gas Company. Later it became the Greenpoint YMCA. The Greenpoint Reformed Church congregation purchased it in 1942. Before that the church had been at 145 Kent Street since 1869. That building is now St. Elias Melkite Catholic Church.

Since 2003 Reverend Ann Kansfield has been a pastor here. Her wife Rev. Jennifer Aull joined her as co-pastor in 2006. Together they co-founded Room For All.

Greenpoint Reformed Church is more than just a place of worship. It actively serves its community. The church hosts a dinner and soup kitchen. Since October 2007 its food pantry program has provided groceries. These go to individuals and families in northern Brooklyn. A homeless shelter briefly opened here in November 2012. It later moved to another church in the neighborhood.

The Greenpoint Reformed Church embodies a spirit of radical inclusion. Its mission is clear. It welcomes all with the love of God. The church strives to be a place where people can worship heal question and rejoice together. It is a place where all are fed in both body and spirit.

Imagine Thomas Smith commissioning those porcelain plaques. Picture the building as a bustling YMCA. Think of the countless individuals who have found solace and support within these walls. The Greenpoint Reformed Church has evolved. It has remained a constant source of hope and community.

So as you continue your tour remember the Greenpoint Reformed Church. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith community and the unexpected beauty. Its commitment makes Greenpoint a better place for all.
