High above Aviators’ Square soars the Monumentul Eroilor Aerului. Its bronze Icarus stretches towards the sky a symbol of aviation’s triumph.

This magnificent monument isn’t just a sculpture. It’s a tribute to Romanian airmen. Men who bravely took to the skies often meeting tragic ends. Built between 1930 and 1935 the Monumentul Eroilor Aerului stands 20 meters tall. It’s a testament to their courage and sacrifice.

The design competition was fierce. Many artists submitted their vision for this memorial. Lidia Kotzebue’s design ultimately won. She used a picture of boxer Joe Louis as inspiration for Icarus’ body. The head is from a photo of a famous aviator.

Notice the three bronze figures at the obelisk’s base. They represent different stages of flight. Each one captures the struggle and the exhilaration. The names of 179 aviators are inscribed on bronze plaques. These are men who perished between 1912 and 1934. Their names live on thanks to this monument.

Gheorghe Caranda’s name is first. He died in 1912 during a training flight. Sava Rotaru’s name is last. He died in thick fog in 1934. Their stories and those of others are woven into the very fabric of the Monumentul Eroilor Aerului.

In 1981 a miniature replica of the monument even traveled to space with cosmonaut Dumitru Prunariu. Every July 20th Aviators’ Day wreaths and flowers adorn this memorial. It is a place of remembrance respect and celebration. The Monumentul Eroilor Aerului stands as a timeless reminder of those who dared to dream and fly.
