What seemed like an ordinary neighborhood at first glance, West New Brighton, holds a past far from ordinary. West New Brighton, once known as “Factoryville,” wasn’t always the lively mix of cultures it is today. The story of West New Brighton begins in the 17th century with Dutch and English settlers. During the American Revolution, residents surprisingly remained loyal to the British Crown. As waves of immigrants arrived, the Irish became the dominant group, followed by Germans, Italians, African Americans, and Hispanics, creating the diverse community we see today. West New Brighton is also home to unique American firsts. Established here in 1872, the Staten Island Cricket Club is the oldest continually operating cricket club in the US. They still play at their original location in Walker Park. This park also boasts the first lawn tennis court in the US, built in 1873. West New Brighton has seen its share of change, particularly after World War II with the construction of large public housing projects, like the Markham Homes and the West Brighton Houses. However, the area has worked to reduce crime rates since the late 90s and remains a vibrant hub on Staten Island.
