A seed of an idea blossomed into a village. Welcome to Floral Park, a charming village on Long Island. It’s a place where flower-lined streets whisper tales of a vibrant past, a testament to the vision of one man, John Lewis Childs. Floral Park wasn’t always a floral paradise. Originally known as East Hinsdale, the area in the 1870s was primarily farmland. It was the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road and Jericho Turnpike that began to transform this sleepy landscape. Enter John Lewis Childs, a seed seller who arrived in 1874. Working initially for the C.L. Allen Company, Childs quickly cultivated his own dreams. He started his seed and bulb business, a venture that would bloom into America’s first seed catalog company. Childs purchased large tracts of land, transforming them into vibrant flower beds. He didn’t just sell seeds; he planted the seeds of a community. He renamed the area Floral Park, a tribute to his flourishing business and the local horticultural industry. The streets themselves bear the names of flowers, a fragrant reminder of his legacy. The Floral Park Post Office, fueled by the massive volume of Childs’ mail-order business, grew to rival those of major cities like Chicago and Boston. The Long Island Rail Road, recognizing the blossoming village, renamed its East Hinsdale station to Floral Park in 1888. In 1908, Floral Park officially incorporated as a village, with John Lewis Childs serving as its first president. By 1903, over 200 acres of Floral Park boasted Childs’ vibrant flower beds. Floral Park is more than just a name. It’s a living testament to a man’s vision and the power of a single seed to transform a landscape. It’s a village that grew from the ground up, one bloom at a time.
