German entrepreneur Erhard Luther founded a brewery in Bucharest. It was first known as Fabrica de Bere Luther. It quickly rose to prominence. It became one of the country’s best-known breweries. Luther’s brewery impacted the market significantly. This included legislative changes and hop-growing initiatives. It also produced some of Romania’s most popular beers.
After the Communist Party gained power in 1948, the brewery was renamed Fabrica Grivița. Then in the 70s, its name changed again to Fabrica Gambrinus. It remained a staple on the Romanian beer scene.
After the Revolution in 1989, things declined for the brewery. Following a series of privatizations, it was sold to Austrian Breweries in 2001. The building was stripped and declassified as a historic monument in 2007. Most of it was demolished for real estate development.
But the story doesn’t end there. In 2019, Matei Lucescu decided to revive the Grivița brand. Matei is the grandson of Romanian football coach Mircea Lucescu. He opened a new brewery with the same name after taking a brewing course in the UK. He invested one million euros. Production began in June 2019. The beers went live the following month.
Fabrica Grivița now operates as an independent brewery and brewpub. It has its own bar and terrace. It is the perfect place to enjoy fresh beer.
