Did you know that Beverly Hills started as an agricultural community? It later became a glamorous city known for its celebrity residents and high-end shopping. Today we are standing in Beverly Hills. This city is located in Los Angeles County, California. It is an affluent suburb of Los Angeles. Beverly Hills is surrounded by the city of Los Angeles and West Hollywood.
Beverly Hills’ story begins long ago. In 1769, Gaspar de Portolá arrived here. He traveled along native trails. Later, in 1828, Maria Rita Quinteros de Valdez and her husband settled here. They called their property Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas.
By the 1880s, Anglos bought up the ranch. Henry Hammel and Andrew H. Denker acquired most of it. They used it for farming lima beans. The area was then known as the Hammel and Denker Ranch. In 1888, they planned to build a town called Morocco.
In 1900, Burton E. Green and his partners formed the Amalgamated Oil Company. They bought the ranch and looked for oil. They didn’t find enough oil. In 1906, they reorganized as the Rodeo Land and Water Company. They renamed the property Beverly Hills. The name came from Beverly Farms in Beverly, Massachusetts. It also reflected the area’s hills.
The first house in Beverly Hills was built in 1907. Sales were slow initially. Beverly Hills was planned as an all-white community. Restrictive covenants prevented non-whites from owning or renting property. It was also forbidden to sell or rent property to Jews.
Burton Green began building The Beverly Hills Hotel in 1911. The hotel opened in 1912. Visitors drawn to the hotel purchased land. By 1914, the population grew. Beverly Hills became an independent city.
In 1919, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford bought land. They built a mansion called Pickfair. This and other movie stars building mansions increased the city’s appeal. By the early 1920s, water supply became a political issue. A proposal to annex Beverly Hills to Los Angeles was defeated.
In 1928, the Beverly Wilshire Apartment Hotel opened. Oilman Edward L. Doheny finished Greystone Mansion. The city now owns Greystone Mansion. It is a historical landmark. In the early 1930s, Santa Monica Park became Beverly Gardens. It spanned the city along Santa Monica Boulevard. The Italian Renaissance-style Beverly Hills City Hall opened in 1931.
In the early 1940s, black actors moved into Beverly Hills. A lawsuit attempted to enforce the whites-only covenants. The NAACP defended the black residents. A judge declared the covenants unenforceable. The Supreme Court did the same in 1948.
In 1956, Paul Trousdale developed Trousdale Estates. This neighborhood became home to many celebrities. Following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, many Persian Jews settled in Beverly Hills.
Today, Beverly Hills remains an affluent city. It is known for its beautiful homes and famous residents. The city has opposed some public transportation projects. However, a Metro D Line extension is planned. Beverly Hills continues to evolve. It balances its glamorous image with the needs of its residents. The city’s history is a mix of agriculture, oil exploration, and Hollywood magic. Beverly Hills is a unique and iconic destination.
