Gazing upon these crumbling walls, do you sense the echoes of a bygone era? This, my friends, is Moara lui Assan. It whispers tales of innovation and industry. Moara lui Assan stands as a testament to Romania’s industrial beginnings. Built in 1853, Moara lui Assan proudly holds the title of Romania’s first steam mill. This very spot, in the Obor-Lizeanu district of Bucharest, once pulsed with the energy of progress. The mill was the brainchild of two merchants, George Assan and Ion Martinovici. They envisioned a future powered by steam, a vision realized within these now-decayed walls. Imagine Bucharest in 1853, a city without a single brick factory. The very bricks that built Moara lui Assan were a novelty. The mill’s machinery, a marvel of the time, was transported from Vienna. This arduous journey, by boat and oxcart, spanned nearly a month. Over the years, Moara lui Assan earned several nicknames. Locals called it “Assan’s Mill,” “The Roller Mill,” “The Fire Mill,” and even, “Assan’s Steamship.” In 1903, the mill celebrated its 50th anniversary. A grand clock, with the years “1853 – 1903” cast in bronze, was placed atop the main building. The “Assan Clock” became a reliable timekeeper for the Obor-Colentina neighborhood. Sadly, Moara lui Assan’s story isn’t one of endless prosperity. Nationalized in 1948, the mill became a victim of communist-era seizures. The Assan family legacy ended tragically. Vasile Assan, the last owner, fell victim to communist repression. The mill continued to operate under state control, but its glory days were over. Despite its historical significance, Moara lui Assan has suffered from neglect and vandalism. Fires, collapsing walls, and scavengers seeking scrap metal have taken their toll. Yet, even in ruins, Moara lui Assan stands as a reminder of Romania’s industrial spirit. It is a poignant symbol of a past yearning to be remembered.
