Schule Wesperloh is a five-form entry primary school. Around 510 students attend. They are taught by a team of 50 teachers and support staff. The school also has three preschool classes.
The school’s history stretches back to 1961. That year marked its official founding. However, the cornerstone for the school buildings was laid in 1960. The school was initially known as Volksschule Krützkamp.
In its early days, Schule Wesperloh played a vital role. Two-thirds of its students came from East Germany and East Berlin. Their families had fled shortly before the Berlin Wall was built. The school offered them a new beginning.
The architecture of Schule Wesperloh reflects its history. The original ensemble includes the Kreuzbau. There is also an administration building and outbuildings. These buildings are now under historical preservation.
Over the years, Schule Wesperloh has adapted to changing needs. In 1981, it stopped offering classes for Haupt- und Realschule. It became a pure primary school. A branch of the school was closed in 1984.
The school has undergone several renovations and expansions. Asbestos-contaminated pavilions were removed in 1988. A new building was opened in September 2016. This new building houses preschool children and first and second graders. The top floor has an island room with impressive views. The entrance area offers space for events.
In January 2017, third and fourth graders moved into the renovated Kreuzbau. The math workshop, art lab, and two second grade classrooms are on the ground floor.
The school grounds are spacious. They provide ample space for play. The children can play on a sports field, a playground, and several schoolyards.
Art plays a role in the school’s history. In 1961, Helmuth Heinsohn created a two-part work. It was called “Organisches und Anorganisches”. This artwork was placed in the Kreuzbau staircase.
Schule Wesperloh continues to evolve. It provides a modern learning environment. It also honors its rich history. The school buildings are protected as cultural monuments of Hamburg.
