The Promise Academy at Roberts Vaux High School, a grand building of yellow brick, stands before you, a testament to Philadelphia’s rich history.

In 1936, the school was born, a Moderne/Art Deco masterpiece designed by Irwin T. Catharine. This monument to education was named in honor of Roberts Vaux, a prominent Philadelphian who championed public education for all. While the school was initially segregated, it eventually became a haven for African-American students.

One of its most famous alumni was Jacob C. White, Jr., who served as principal from 1864 to 1896 and played a vital role in reforming the institution. He became a leading figure in urban education during his tenure. The school’s storied history was further enhanced by the “Bad Bishops,” its chess team. The Bad Bishops went on to win a record-breaking seven consecutive national junior high championships from 1977 to 1983, even earning a White House visit before their international trip to Yugoslavia.

Unfortunately, the school was closed in 2013 as part of Philadelphia’s budget cuts. Students were scattered among other schools, leaving a void in the community. However, in 2017, Roberts Vaux reopened its doors as the Promise Academy, a beacon hope for North Philadelphia. This rebirth under the leadership of Big Picture Philadelphia, a charter organization, marks a new chapter in the school’s legacy.

Today, the Promise Academy at Roberts Vaux stands tall, a symbol of resilience and a promise for a brighter future. With renewed purpose, it continues to educate and inspire the next generation of Philadelphians.
