On a crisp Kolkata morning in April 1994, Army Public School opened its doors. It began with just 7 teachers and 173 students. Today, standing before the imposing gates of Army Public School, Ballygunge, it’s hard to imagine such humble beginnings. This English-medium, co-ed institution, affiliated with the CBSE board, has blossomed into a significant landmark in Kolkata’s educational landscape. Army Public School is located within the Ballygunge Military Camp. The school offers education from grades 1 through 12, culminating in three main streams for higher secondary students. Those are Science, Commerce, and Humanities. Originally known as Army School, it transitioned to Army Public School in April 2002. This marked a significant milestone. It became the first and only Army School in the Eastern region to achieve “Public School” status. The school is overseen by the Army Welfare Education Society. Over 2500 students now call this school home. They are guided by a dedicated faculty of 137 teachers. The campus boasts two main buildings. One houses the primary wing and the other the senior wing. Each operates as an independent unit. A principal and vice principal manage each wing. Inside, you’ll find smart classrooms and well-equipped labs promoting holistic student development. Army Public School also houses two libraries. There are also two computer labs and three science labs, alongside dedicated spaces for mathematics and geography. The school offers counselling services to support students’ overall well-being and mental health. Beyond academics, the school cultivates a vibrant co-curricular program. Students can explore various activities. These range from football and yoga to karate, roller skating, debate, and dramatics. Army Public School also boasts a Science Park. Here, students engage with scientific concepts through interactive rides. A Herbal Garden, lovingly tended by the students, displays various medicinal herbs and plants. Dr. Suchitra Bandyopadhyay currently serves as the principal, with Jhumur Ghosh as the headmistress. The school is divided into four houses: Red (Bose), Green (Raman), Blue (Bhava), and Yellow (Khurana). These houses foster a sense of community and healthy competition within the student body.
