Deep within Bucharest’s embrace stands Antim Monastery. Antim Ivireanu, a remarkable figure, envisioned this sanctuary. He wasn’t just a monk; he was an author, printer, architect, theologian, and bishop. Antim Monastery Church, his masterpiece, arose between 1713 and 1715. It replaced a simple wooden church dedicated to St. Nicholas. Antim Monastery Church is more than just a building. It represents the Brâncovenesc architectural style. This style beautifully blends Orthodox and Ottoman traditions with Renaissance flourishes. Antim himself carved the intricate double wooden doors and painted some of the church’s interior artwork. Antim Monastery Church has a trefoil-shaped plan, adorned with expansive windows and ornate rosettes. The entrance portal, framed by decorated columns, stands as a testament to Antim’s vision. Above this entrance, you’ll find his carved emblem, a silent tribute to his enduring legacy. The Synod’s Palace, now home to the monastery library, likely emerged around 1800 thanks to Bishop Iosif d’Argeș. Between 1857 and 1860, Antim Monastery underwent a significant restoration. This included the addition of an oak pulpit, crafted by Carol Storck. The bell tower, which today serves as the monastery’s entrance gate, was later modified. It received a Romantic-style update and four corner towers, all designed by architect Johann Schlatter. In the 1960s, Patriarch Justinian Marina spearheaded another restoration of the monastery buildings. As of 2005, seven monks called this peaceful haven home. Antim Monastery also houses a museum. This museum showcases religious artifacts and chronicles the life of its founder, Antim Ivireanu. Sadly, Antim Monastery’s history also has a darker chapter. During World War II, some monks were implicated in the destruction of a nearby synagogue and the persecution of Jewish residents. This act casts a shadow on the monastery’s otherwise inspiring story. Antim Monastery Church remains a vibrant testament to faith, art, and history. It’s a place where the echoes of the past mingle with the quiet prayers of the present.
