Did the Jack Cone family ever imagine their home, once a country club and later Gilbert’s Bar and Lounge, would become a church? Saint Matthews United Methodist Church held its first service on November 1, 1959, right there at 2930 Nacogdoches Rd. Saint Matthews, or St. Matt’s as it’s affectionately known, has a rich history intertwined with San Antonio. The groundbreaking for their current location on MacArthur View, formerly Bitters Rd., happened on August 14, 1960. That original building still stands, housing classrooms, the choir room, and the nursery. St. Matt’s is a vibrant part of the community. They host a scout troop, Parents’ Night Out, and a day school that has been running for 50 years. They also have a Spanish language ministry, Agua Viva. St. Matt’s offers multiple Sunday services: traditional at 8:30 am, blended at 11:00 am, and Agua Viva at 12:30 pm. Sunday school for all ages meets at 9:45 am. Wednesday nights feature a meal followed by classes for children, youth, and adults. St. Matt’s has a long-standing commitment to serving others, providing disaster relief and feeding the homeless under the bridge. They welcome everyone and offer accommodations such as earplugs, a sensory suite, and gluten-free communion options. From its humble beginnings in a repurposed building to its current thriving community, Saint Matthews United Methodist Church has consistently embraced the spirit of service and love.
