Centuries of stories reside within these walls, and we are about to uncover one of them right here at Luz Church. This Roman Catholic shrine, also known as Our Lady of Light Shrine, stands as one of Chennai’s oldest churches. Its history is interwoven with faith, light, and the arrival of the Portuguese in India.
The Luz Church’s story begins in the 16th century. It is a tale of missionaries lost at sea. In 1500 AD, eight Franciscan Portuguese priests sailed from Lisbon toward India. A fierce storm engulfed their ship. They prayed to the Virgin Mary for guidance. Suddenly, a bright light appeared leading them to safety. This light guided them to a forest area in Mylapore.
Led by Father Pedro da Atougia, the priests built a church in honor of Mother Mary. They named it Nossa Senhora Da Luz, meaning Our Lady of Light. Locals call it Luz Church. Some even call it Kattu Koil, the forest shrine, reflecting its original jungle setting. Imagine this area as a thick forest back then.
The Luz Church stands near Santhome Basilica. Saint Thomas, one of Jesus’ apostles, is believed to be buried there. The arrival of Christianity in India occurred in two phases. Saint Thomas brought the religion in the first century. The Portuguese arrived in the 15th century, marking the second phase. The Luz Church connects both phases.
The Portuguese built the existing structure in 1516. Its architecture blends Gothic arches, Baroque ornamentation, and European styles. Silver and gold leaves gild the altars. Over the years, the Luz Church faced challenges. Golconda Muslim forces damaged it between 1662 and 1673. During Hyder Ali’s invasion, the British East India Company occupied the parish residence. Despite these events, the Luz Church endured.
The Luz Church celebrated its 500th anniversary. The church continues to be a place of worship and community. It governs Stella Maris College in Chennai. The feast of Our Lady of Light is celebrated every year on August 15th. This day is also Indian Independence Day.
