What tales does the Hudson whisper about Bloomer Beach? This beach is more than just sand and water. It is a place steeped in history and family legacies. Welcome to Bloomer Beach. It was once a bustling hub of river commerce.

The story of Bloomer Beach is deeply intertwined with the Bloomer family. For over a century, the Bloomer Brothers called this area home. They significantly contributed to the Hudson River’s maritime activities. Their endeavors shaped the very fabric of this shoreline.

Let’s journey back to the early 1800s. Anderson and Elisha Bloomer migrated from Westchester County. They sought new opportunities along the Hudson Palisades. By 1793, they had established themselves as vital figures in river commerce.

These brothers weren’t just boatmen. They were pioneers. They transformed Bloomer Beach into a family legacy. They engaged in various aspects of Hudson River trade. Their efforts supported the growing needs of New York City.

In February 1848, Anderson and George Bloomer secured the right to erect a wharf. This was a turning point. It solidified their presence and influence on the Hudson. By 1855, their property had evolved. It became a notable dock facility known as Bloomerville.

The Bloomer family’s “Pitching Place” was strategically located. It was near where the George Washington Bridge now crosses the Hudson. Here, raw timber and quarried stone were tossed from the cliffs. They were then loaded onto family sloops. These sloops then sailed to New York City.

These families were not alone in their endeavors. The Allisons, Beckers, Crums, Normans, Pearcells, Van Wagoners and Whitlocks all worked there. They were interconnected. They lived at the foot of the Hudson Palisades. Their lives were woven together through work and kinship.

Captain John William Crum and Benjamin Westervelt documented life under the Palisades. Their stories paint a vivid picture of a community. This community thrived on the river’s bounty and faced its perils.

Imagine the scene during the 1850s. It was common to see 150 sloops tied along the Palisade shoreline. Captain Crum recalled many of these sloops and their captains by name. Hiram and Solomon Bloomer sailed the Edwin Smith, Margaret and Elias Hicks. Captain Becker built and owned the Ajax. George and Robert T. Bloomer captained the Bright.

The river also presented dangers. River collisions and drowning deaths were frequent. The sloops’ bowsprits were often involved in accidents. The new steam engines and boilers posed major problems. They lacked safety features.

Despite the dangers, the community found ways to celebrate. Captain Crum fondly recalled sailing to Manhattan. He would spend “boys-night-out” in New York City.

Even today, the area near the George Washington Bridge is a popular fishing spot. Bloomer Beach remains a testament to the enduring legacy of the Bloomer family. It stands as a reminder of the families that shaped the Hudson River’s history.

As you stand here at Bloomer Beach consider the generations who came before. Think about their lives and their legacies on these shores. Their spirit endures in the gentle lapping of the waves and the whispers of the wind.
