Sportpark Am Hallo boasts a rich history. It wasn’t always the modern facility you see today. A previous stadium stood here. It was built after World War II. There was also a triple sports hall from the seventies. Both were replaced to give Essen better sporting facilities.
Construction of the current Sportpark Am Hallo started in August 1999. The opening was in August 2001. Two years of work went into creating this remarkable space. The stadium has everything for athletics. There are eight sprint tracks and six circular tracks. The grass field is used for football and American football. It even has a 60-meter sprint track under the main stand. This clever design is unique. It allows for training all year round. It has space for high jump long jump and triple jump too. Imagine training there in winter protected from the weather.
The stadium seats 3800 spectators. A record crowd of 3750 watched a thrilling DFB Cup semi-final here on April 8 2007. SG Essen-Schönebeck played FCR 2001 Duisburg. Since the new stadium opened SG Essen-Schönebeck plays there not at the old Stadion Am Hallo.
The impressive sports hall is just as important. It can hold 2578 spectators. It’s home to TUSEM Essen handball and ETB Miners Essen basketball. The hall opened May 3 2003 with a TUSEM game against GWD Minden. Unfortunately a water leak caused problems in January 2018. Mold formed so repairs lasted until September 2018. The TUSEM team had to play some games elsewhere.
