Gazing up at Saint Catherine’s Church, have you ever wondered about its unique place in New York City’s vibrant tapestry? Saint Catherine’s Church stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community. The story of Saint Catherine’s Church begins in 1896. It started as a mission of St. Vincent Ferrer Church. The Dominicans sought to serve the predominantly Irish community nestled between Second Avenue and the East River, from 60th to 72nd Street. This new spiritual haven was dedicated to Saint Catherine of Siena, the patron saint of healers. Initially, a modest three-story brick structure on East 69th Street served as the temporary church, consecrated in 1897. A parochial school soon followed, housed in a building across the street. By 1905, the church building itself was cleverly adapted. The school occupied the lower level, while the upper level accommodated a spacious church with 1100 seats. In 1930, ambitious plans were unveiled for a new church facing East 68th Street. This marked the beginning of the present Saint Catherine’s Church. The new church, designed by Wilfrid E. Anthony, embraced the Arts and Crafts architectural style. This style makes it a distinctive landmark among New York City’s houses of worship. The construction, completed in 1931, ushered in a new era for the parish. Interestingly, with the rise of hospitals in the surrounding area in the 1930s, Saint Catherine’s Church extended its ministry to patients and staff. This tradition of compassionate care continues to this day. In 1957, a modern two-story convent and penthouse were added on East 69th Street. This addition was designed by the architectural firm of Starrett & Van Vleck. In a significant development in 2015, Saint Catherine’s Church merged with St. Vincent Ferrer Church, forming a united parish. Remarkably, both churches continue to hold services, preserving their individual legacies within the shared community. Saint Catherine’s Church stands as a symbol of resilience and adaptation, continuing to serve its community amidst the ever-evolving landscape of New York City.
