Wow. Look at the Gilman Bridge. A stunning arch of concrete it spans Interstate 5. It’s more than just a bridge though.

The Gilman Bridge is a vital artery for UC San Diego. It links the east and west campuses. This wasn’t always the case. Before its construction students faculty and visitors had a less convenient route. Imagine the daily struggles. The bridge is a testament to thoughtful planning and collaboration. SANDAG UC San Diego and Caltrans worked together to make it a reality. The Mid-Coast Trolley project even ran concurrently. They coordinated to minimize disruption and maximize resource use.

The design wasn’t arbitrary. UC San Diego wanted a bridge that matched its innovative spirit. Moffatt & Nichol the design firm presented several options. A standard box girder a three-span frame and the chosen elegant concrete arch. This 406-foot-long structure is unique in the I-5 corridor. Its graceful curves have become a defining feature of the landscape.

More than just aesthetics the Gilman Bridge serves a practical purpose. It carries cars buses bicycles and pedestrians. It’s part of a larger campus loop road alleviating traffic congestion. This 32 million dollar project represents a significant investment in the university’s infrastructure. It was completed in 2019. The entire project adhered to the 100% Buy America requirement. Portland Bolt even provided the stainless steel bolts for the bridge railing.

But there is more. At night the Gilman Bridge transforms. It lights up showcasing the words “University of California San Diego”. During the day this text appears blue. At night it glows bright white. It’s quite a sight. A modern marvel.

The Gilman Bridge is a symbol of progress connection and the enduring partnership between academia government and engineering expertise. It stands as a remarkable achievement. A bridge that connects not just two sides of a campus but also two sides of San Diego’s history. A bridge that stands for a future of progress and innovation.
