“Good” is the word that Ofsted uses to describe Oasis Academy MediaCityUK. This academy stands as a beacon of learning in Salford Quays. It welcomes students aged 11 to 16. Oasis Academy MediaCityUK is more than just a school. It is a hub for the community.
Oasis Academy MediaCityUK has roots stretching back to 1958. Back then, it was Hope Hall Secondary Modern School. It was built on the site of a demolished manor house. The school aimed to address a shortage of school places in West Salford.
In 2008, Hope High School transformed into Oasis Academy MediaCityUK. This change reflected a move to Salford Quays. It anticipated the BBC’s relocation there. The academy’s early days were not without challenges. There were objections from unions. There were teacher redundancies. Students even rioted in support of their teachers.
In 2012, Oasis Academy MediaCityUK found its new home. It was a shiny, 25 million pounds building. But initial inspections were harsh. Ofsted rated the school “inadequate” in all areas in 2014. It was placed into special measures.
A turnaround began with a new principal. Fiona O’Sullivan expelled students and hired new teachers. She implemented weekly staff training. She accepted help from another local school.
Oasis Academy MediaCityUK is part of Oasis Community Learning. This is a multi-academy trust. It is also an evangelical Christian charity. The trust aims to improve its schools’ performance. They use a standard curriculum. They invest in staff training. The trust provides tablets for staff and students.
The curriculum includes core National Curriculum subjects at Key Stage 3. It builds on primary school knowledge. At Key Stage 4, the focus shifts to the English Baccalaureate. There are daily lessons in Maths, English, and Science. Spanish is taught as the modern language. Lessons follow a three-part structure. There is a “Do Now” activity. There is an “I do – We do – You do” segment. There is a plenary to recap the lesson.
In 2018, Oasis Academy MediaCityUK announced impressive exam results. 60% of pupils gained grades 4-9 in English and Maths combined. In June 2016, Ofsted rated the school “Good”. Students felt safe and calmer.
Today, Oasis Academy MediaCityUK is led by Principal Paul McEvoy. The academy has a capacity of 1,150 students. As of 2024, there are 1,020 pupils enrolled. A significant portion of students are eligible for free school meals.
Oasis Academy MediaCityUK extends beyond education. It offers community services through Oasis Hub MediaCityUK. There is a Talk English Café. There is a parent and toddler group. There are youth work programs. These initiatives aim to transform the community.
