Gazing at the Naviglio Grande, can you sense the echoes of history? This isn’t just a canal. It’s a time machine. The Naviglio Grande whispers stories of a Milan far different from the bustling metropolis we know today. The Naviglio Grande stands as a testament to Milan’s ingenuity and ambition. Construction on this vital waterway began in 1177. It connected the Ticino River to the heart of Milan. Imagine workers, armed with only pickaxes and shovels, carving this 49.9 km channel. The canal wasn’t built overnight. It took decades of back-breaking labor. The section from Tornavento to Gaggiano, known as the “Navigium de Gazano,” took over 50 years to complete. Even prisoners from Turbigo were enlisted to help expand the canal’s capacity in 1239. By 1258, the Naviglio Grande finally reached Milan. New taxes were levied, and despite opposition, the entire canal was navigable by 1272. Though intended primarily for irrigation, the Naviglio Grande quickly became a bustling commercial artery. Picture the scene: flat-bottomed boats, called “cobbie,” plying the waters. They carried salt, grain, wine, and manufactured goods upriver to Lake Maggiore and Switzerland. Returning, they brought back livestock, cheese, lumber, and marble. The Naviglio Grande even played a crucial role in the construction of the Duomo. It transported the heavy marble needed for the cathedral, starting in 1386. The canal became Milan’s most valuable transport route. It proved essential for moving troops between defensive castles. From 1830 to the end of the century, the Naviglio Grande saw an average of 8,300 boats annually, carrying 350,000 long tons of goods. The canal experienced a resurgence during World War II. With roads and railways bombed, water transport became crucial again. This continued even after the war. In 1953, the Porta Ticinese dock, where the Naviglio Grande enters Milan, was the 13th largest in Italy. Sadly, road transport eventually led to the canal’s decline as a commercial route. In 1979, the last cargo of sand was unloaded at the Darsena. Since then, the Naviglio Grande has served its original purpose: irrigation. But its story doesn’t end there. There are ongoing campaigns to restore navigation on the Naviglio Grande. The “From Switzerland to the Sea” project envisions a long-distance waterway linking Lake Maggiore to Venice. As you stand here, beside the Naviglio Grande, take a moment to appreciate its remarkable journey. It has served as a lifeline for Milan for centuries. From its medieval origins to its potential future as a revitalized waterway, the Naviglio Grande continues to shape the city’s identity.
