On a hill overlooking Bucharest, the National Cathedral of Romania commands attention. The People’s Salvation Cathedral, as it’s also known, is a modern marvel and a testament to Romanian faith and resilience. This colossal structure isn’t just a place of worship. It represents the culmination of a dream, a dream first envisioned after the Romanian War of Independence (1877–1878). The initial idea was to commemorate the victory of Orthodox Christians. However, the project stalled, facing disagreements over design, location, and funding. The dream was revived in the late 20th century by Patriarch Teoctist. After considering several locations, the site on Spirea’s Hill was chosen, offering a prominent position in the cityscape. Construction of the National Cathedral of Romania began in 2010. The consecration ceremony took place on November 25, 2018, led by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I and Patriarch Daniel of Romania. This marked a pivotal moment, not just for the church, but for the nation. The National Cathedral of Romania is the world’s largest Eastern Orthodox church by volume and area. Its sheer size is astounding: 126 meters long, 68 meters wide, and reaching a height of 135 meters with the cross. Inside, the nave soars to an impressive 44 meters, making it one of the tallest in the world. The interior is a canvas of intricate mosaics, covering an area of 18,000 square meters, the largest collection in any church worldwide. Venetian glass and Italian Carrara stone form the millions of tesserae that bring these biblical scenes and the lives of saints to life. The iconostasis, the screen separating the nave from the sanctuary, also holds a world record for its size. It’s a masterpiece of Byzantine art. Dominating the western end is the bell tower, housing the world’s largest free-swinging church bell, weighing over 25 tons. Its sound is meant to echo the famous Pummerin bell in Vienna. The National Cathedral is dedicated to the Ascension of Christ, celebrated as Heroes’ Day in Romania, and to Saint Andrew the Apostle, the country’s protector. The underground spaces of the National Cathedral of Romania are equally impressive. A large chapel and a polyvalent gallery, known as St. Andrew’s Cave, provide space for thousands of worshippers and visitors. A future museum will showcase the history of Romanian Christianity. This grand edifice has not been without controversy, due to its substantial public funding. Yet, the Romanian Orthodox Church views it as a symbol of national unity and spiritual renewal. The People’s Salvation Cathedral in Bucharest is more than a building. It’s a story etched in stone and glass, a story of faith, perseverance, and a nation’s spiritual heart.
