Did you know that the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum was once the home of the famous author? Here at the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, we step back in time to explore the life and legacy of Robert Louis Stevenson. He was known to the Samoans as Tusitala, “Teller of Tales”.

Robert Louis Stevenson, the famed author of “Treasure Island” and “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”, spent his final years here in Samoa. Originally from Scotland, Stevenson sought a climate that would improve his health. He arrived in Samoa in 1890. The Robert Louis Stevenson Museum stands as a testament to his life here.

Imagine Stevenson walking these halls. Picture him writing in his library. Feel the echoes of his stories in this very space at the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum.

Stevenson quickly became a respected figure in the local community. Samoans admired him for his positive interactions and great ‘mana’. He supported Samoan indigenous political interests. Stevenson was critical of colonial rule.

The house, named Villa Vailima, was completed in 1891. It featured five bedrooms, a library, and Samoa’s only working fireplace. The Robert Louis Stevenson Museum proudly displays a curated version of his residence. It offers a glimpse into his daily life.

After Stevenson’s death in 1894 at the age of 44, the villa had a varied history. It served as the residence for the Governor of German Samoa and later for the New Zealand administrator. Hurricanes in 1990 and 1991 caused significant damage.

In 1994, the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum was founded. American businessmen Jim Winegar and Tilafaiga Rex Maughan restored the building. Donations from outside Samoa funded the project. Today, the museum operates with a board that includes Samoan government representatives.

Inside the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, you’ll find a collection of items related to his life. Some pieces are authentic period items, while others are replicas. The house is presented as if Stevenson still lived here.

A highlight of the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum is the access it provides to Stevenson’s grave. It is located on top of Mount Vaea. After touring the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, you can hike to his tomb.
