Hidden within Berlin’s urban sprawl lies the Habermannsee. It’s a tranquil oasis with a story to tell. The Habermannsee isn’t a naturally formed lake. It began as a kiesgrube, a gravel pit, in the late 1930s. After the extraction work ended, the pit gradually filled with groundwater and rain. This transformation gave birth to the Habermannsee, a haven for diverse plants and animals. The Habermannsee is part of the Kaulsdorfer Seen, a chain of lakes including the Elsensee and Butzer See. This 15.25-hectare expanse sits within a 95-hectare protected landscape area. The name “Habermannsee” comes from the Habermann company. They operated the gravel pit that preceded the lake. The eastern edge of the Habermannsee has a unique feature. A narrow peninsula sometimes separates it from the western part. This division occurs during periods of low groundwater, creating a smaller lake known as the Kiessee. The landscape surrounding the Habermannsee offers a mix of natural beauty and human activity. You’ll find natural woodlands, meadows, and reed-lined shores. Willow trees grace the water’s edge. Common fish species like eel, pike, and roach thrive in the clear waters. Nearby, the Kaulsdorfer Busch provides a forested area with poplars, pines, and spruces. The area also plays a role in Berlin’s water supply. The Kaulsdorf waterworks, established in 1916, uses the area for groundwater extraction. This extraction activity impacts the water levels of the Habermannsee and its neighboring lakes. Though designated as a drinking water protection area, the Habermannsee attracts swimmers during summer. Twice a year, the “Rund um die Kaulsdorfer Seen” cross-country run takes place, with the route circling both the Habermannsee and Butzer See. So next time you’re in Berlin, seek out the Habermannsee. It’s more than just a body of water. It’s a testament to the interplay of nature and human industry. It’s a place where a former gravel pit has been reborn as a vital urban ecosystem.
