How many secrets does this building hold? Right before you stands the National History Museum of Romania a treasure trove of Romanian history. This imposing structure on Calea Victoriei wasn’t always a museum. Initially intended as the Central Post Office it was built between 1894 and 1900 by architect Alexandru Savulescu. His designs were inspired by a postal facility in Geneva. The building itself is a masterpiece of eclectic architecture. Note the rectangular shape the large porch the high basement and three upper floors. The stone facade is breathtaking a portico supported by ten Doric columns a platform of twelve steps stretching the building’s length.

The National History Museum of Romania opened its doors in 1970. It’s the most important museum in Romania. Within its 8000 square meters are approximately 60 exhibition rooms. Imagine the sheer weight of history contained within these walls. The museum houses artifacts from prehistoric times to the modern era. A highlight is the plaster cast of Trajan’s Column a testament to Roman power. You’ll also see the Romanian Crown Jewels sparkling symbols of royalty and the Pietroasele treasure a 4th-century Gothic hoard of gold. The Steel Crown of King Carol I made from the steel of a cannon captured during the 1877-1878 War of Independence is also here.

Sadly the museum experienced a devastating loss in 2025. The Helmet of Cobofenești a Geto-Dacian helmet from the first half of the 4th century BC was stolen while on loan. Three other gold artifacts were also taken. This theft sparked outrage and led to the dismissal of the museum’s director Ernest Oberländer. He was accused of failing to adequately protect Romania’s national heritage. This incident however only serves to highlight the immense value and fragility of the museum’s collection. The museum is still undergoing restoration. A late medieval archaeological site was discovered beneath the building adding another layer to the site’s rich past.

The National History Museum of Romania is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the struggles triumphs and cultural identity of Romania. Each artifact each room each detail whispers stories of a nation’s journey. Take your time explore and let the past come alive. This isn’t just a museum it’s a portal to the heart of Romania’s history.
