A silent sentinel stands before us. This is the Monumentul Eroilor CFR a tribute to railway workers. The monument honors their sacrifice during World War I. It stands in Piața Gării de Nord a place of constant motion.

Sculptors Cornel Medrea and Ion Jalea created this masterpiece. The statue was cast in the V.V. Rășcanu Factory adding to its history.
Ion Jalea was a prominent Romanian sculptor. He lost his left hand during World War I. Despite this he sculpted with his right hand for the rest of his life. His extensive work includes portraits and statuary compositions. These works drew inspiration from folk legends ancient mythology and historical events.
Jalea led the Union of Plastic Artists. He was a member of the Academy and a People’s Artist. His notable works include “Hercules’ Fight with the Centaur” and the medallion “Barbaria.”
Cornel Medrea was from Transylvania. He studied in Hungary and Germany before settling in Bucharest. He traveled to Italy France and Yugoslavia for study. Medrea taught sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts. He also became a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy.
Medrea and Jalea collaborated on reliefs for the Mausoleum in Mărășești. Medrea also created the bust of Barbu Ștefănescu Delavrancea. You can see it on Șoseaua Kiseleff.
The central group shows an allegorical figure. A woman symbolizes the homeland. She crowns a railway worker with laurels. On the right a soldier bids farewell to his family. The group to the left depicts two railway workers.
The Monumentul Eroilor CFR inscription reads: “EROILOR CFR 1916-1918.” This inscription honors the CFR Heroes of 1916-1918.
In the past the monument enjoyed more space than it does today. Photos from the 1960s show a more generous protective area. Now it stands as a solemn reminder amidst the city’s hustle.
