A magnificent horseshoe. That’s the shape of the main performance hall inside the Bucharest National Opera. Marvel at its grandeur.

This isn’t just any opera house. It’s a vital part of Romania’s cultural heart. Founded in 1877 as the Romanian Opera Company the Bucharest National Opera became an independent institution in 1921. It’s one of four national opera organizations in the entire country. Its first director was the composer George Stephănescu.

The opera you see before you wasn’t always here. The current building a stunning structure designed by Octav Doicescu and Paraschiva Iubu opened in 1954. It was built for two massive festivals the World Youth Congress and the World Festival of Youth and Students. The building boasts 952 seats. Its facade is adorned with three monumental arches statues of muses and bas-reliefs depicting opera scenes and ballerinas. Notice the sculptures. One scene is by Zoe Băicoianu and Boris Caragea the other by Ion Vlad.

More than just performances the opera holds a special place in Romanian history. Think of the countless singers conductors dancers and artists who graced its stage. The building itself is a historical monument a testament to Romania’s rich artistic heritage.

Look closely. In the park outside stands a bronze statue of George Enescu a legendary Romanian composer. Another statue honors Gheorghe Stephănescu the founder of the Romanian Opera Company. They stand as silent guardians of this magnificent institution.
