Once upon a time, in the heart of Bucharest, nestled within the sprawling Băneasa Forest, a unique haven for creatures great and small emerged. Bucharest Zoo, a vibrant tapestry of wildlife, first opened its gates to the public on May 1, 1959. Before finding its permanent home, the animals now residing at Bucharest Zoo were scattered throughout the city’s various parks. They could be found gracing the grounds of Cișmigiu, Carol I, and Herăstrău parks. Imagine the surprise of park-goers encountering exotic animals during their afternoon strolls! Bucharest Zoo’s creation involved a gradual gathering of these animals. Between 1955 and 1959, they were relocated to what was then called the Băneasa Zoological Corner, culminating in the zoo’s official opening. Initially a service of the Municipal Household Section of the People’s Council of the Capital, the institution officially became the Bucharest Zoo in 1962. This same year marked its inclusion in the prestigious International Zoo Yearbook. This recognition cemented Bucharest Zoo’s place among the world’s respected zoological institutions. Today, Bucharest Zoo spans 5.85 hectares. It houses a diverse collection of indigenous and exotic animals. The zoo serves a dual purpose.
