Rising from the ashes, not once, but metaphorically and literally, stands the Holy Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. This church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the resilience and faith of its congregation. Holy Chapel Missionary Baptist Church has been a beacon of hope in Compton for over 80 years. It started as a small mission in 1944 by William Cobbs on Alabama Street in Los Angeles. The church quickly grew, necessitating a move to a larger location on Central Avenue in 1957. Holy Chapel Missionary Baptist Church eventually found its current home on Rosecrans Avenue in Compton. The journey wasn’t always smooth. The original Rosecrans Avenue building was tragically destroyed by fire in 1991. Undeterred, the congregation worshipped at other churches while their own was rebuilt. They returned to their newly reconstructed church in 1993, their spirit unbroken. Today, the Holy Chapel Missionary Baptist Church thrives under the leadership of Pastor George Louis Thomas. He has served the church since 1986. Pastor Thomas oversaw the burning of the church’s mortgage in 1988, just two years into his pastorate. He also led the reconstruction efforts after the fire. Pastor Thomas is known for delivering unique sermons every Sunday and for his dedication to Christian education. He holds two Sunday services, Bible study every Wednesday, and even hosts a radio broadcast on KALI 900 AM. The church also has a rich history of community outreach, reflecting its commitment to serving those in need. This includes homeless ministry and a vibrant youth program. Holy Chapel Missionary Baptist Church welcomes everyone to join their services. Come as you are. No formal attire is needed, just an open heart.
